In most organisations, directly under the ‘Strategic’ layer, a ‘Program Management’ layer has been established. This layer often consists of strategic clusters of a multiple projects, that serve a distinct set of of ‘business objectives’. They -so to speak- ‘manage the business benefits‘. These Programmes oftentimes have a life cycle of about 7 to 10 jaar.
I have held the ‘Program Management’-role for many multinational corporations: DSM, Origin, Philips Digital Networks, Philips International, ASML Development & Engineering, DAF Trucks. In the basis the following key activities were in focus:
- Overlooking and steering a broad variety of new technologies.
- Keeping the portfolio tightly connected to the strategy of the company involved.
- Managing multiple projects simultaneously by identifying and managing the boundary conditions..
